Basic Fishing Knots – Part 1
Posted on 30. Aug, 2008 by Jaime Elizaga in Newbie Guide
Every anglers must know a couple of fishing knots. Different types of rigs would make use of different knots. Here are a few of the most common fishing knots
An Albright knot is used to join heavy lines with lighter lines, like attaching a leader to your main line.
A Blood Bight Knot (left)is basically two looping knots that you can use to join two lines together. Like the albright, this knot can be used to attach your leader to your main line. An advantage of this knot is you can easily unjoin the two lines if needed.
The Surgeon’s knot (right)is another way of connecting two lines but this time with similar size and radius. I like this surgeon’s knot alot bcause it turns out as a small knot and easily passes through the leader. A refinement I do with this knot is to loop the tag end, much similar to the improved clinch knot.
A clinch knot (below)is used to attach hooks, swivels, weights to your line or leader. A clinch knot is relatively easy to do but the knot strenght is quite weak. Use this only for light tackle.
A good knot to use for tieing hooks to your line would be the palomar knot (below).
For Sabiki or paternoster Rigs, a Dropper Knot (left) is the best choice.
One of the most verstatile knot to use is the Uni Knot (below) . It can be called a knot system itself since it can be used to tie a hook, swivel or weight into your line, and you can even use it to tie two lines together or connect your leader to your main line.
That’s Part 1 of our Basic Fishing Knots. The knots mentioned here would cover most of your needs. Stay tuned for Part 2 where I will show you advanced knots.
